Auto Industry

Class-

We've been talking a lot about prices of items in the marketplace. Many times our discussions have centered around the price of gas. Recently Ford and GM published their losses for the 3rd quarter of the year.

Many of our discussions focused around the development of new technology, which relied on other resources than gasoline. With the recent drop in the price of gas, what do you feel will be the response of the auto-makers? Should they continue to develop vehicles which run on alternative fuel at the pace they were when gas prices were so high? Will consumers be so concerned about buying hybrid vehicles? Where should the auto industry go from here?

After you post, please feel free to, respectively, agree or disagree and why.

I think that at least for the moment while the gas prices are down the auto makers should cut back production on the hybrids and environmental friendly cars. People are not really hurt by the gas prices as much as they were. If the auto makers continue to make the same amount of hybrids as they did while the gas prices were up there is a good chance that they will lose money because not as many peole will buy them due to the fact that gas is not a huge cost factor at the moment.

I believe that the smart decision for the auto-makers is to continue producing alternative fuel automobiles for the simple fact that gas prices probably will go back up. If they work hard now while people are'nt having problems with gas prices then whe there is a problem they have plenty of alternitive oil auotmobiles. Until the gas prices go up the consumer will not be to worried anout a hybrid car. However, once the gas prices go up they will be looking towards alternitive oil.

Ricardo & Kyle, great posts...you've both presented each side.

So does the question lie in where do we think gas prices will go..remain down or head back up? What about the environmental movement we heard so much about and the "going green" initiative? It this all for nothing now?

I think that they should continue producing hybrids and automobiles that can run on alternative fuels because the price of gas will most likely rise again due to the bad condition of the economy. I also think people will still buy hybrids for the time being because they want to be ready for if and when the gas prices do go back up.

Even though gas prices are down right now everyone knows that they will rise again once the summer season comes around. I feel that people will still invest and want a hybrid because thinking ahead it can save them a lot of money. I believe that the companys should continue production of hybrids infact even make more then befor.

Gas prices are going down but that doesnt mean we found more gas it just means that people werent buying it as much so the price deflated. Oil/gas is a limited resource which means evenually we are going to run out of it. I think that companies should still focus on making fuel efficient cars because it will make them money and save our natural resources. The bottom line is is that prices will eventually go back up so we should keep producing fuel efficient cars because eventually people are going to need them and its better just to be prepared for anything.

The automakers should keep making the the hybrids and the alternative fuel automobiles because people will want to be prepared for another rise in gas prices. This could be a chance for them to make better cars of that kind for when the rise does come back and more people are interested.

I think auto retailers will continue to make hybrids becuase gas prices go down than back up again. I think they will also make a profit due to people worrying about gas prices going up they will be willing to spend the extra buck for the hybrid. I think either way it won't hurt to keep gasoline cars because some people dont like hybrids, but this could danger our environment.

I believe that our movement towards gasoline products is not the way that this country should go towards and should try to endorse other forms of fuel, such as sun light and water.

I think the automakers should continue to make hybrid vehicles. If they cut back the production of hybrids, fuel will be a high demand and prices are likely to rise.
